FACEBOOK’S LATEST NEWS FEED UPDATE COULD SHOW YOU LONGER VIDEOS

Image
If you happen to be someone who sits through the majority or all of a video, you can rest assured you’ll see more videos of a similar duration on the News Feed. Your commitment to a longer video indicates to Facebook that the content in question is engaging, and it therefore uses that signal to prioritize the clip in terms of News Feed distribution. Chances are this change won’t affect you if you steer clear of visual content altogether or only engage with it briefly. However, the change could result in Pages creating longer videos in order to benefit from the update. Facebook claims that alongside the bump for longer clips, shorter videos may see a slight dip in distribution. The company warns that compelling content is not determined by its duration, and instead relies on the story it tells. It also advises Page admins to look at video insights in order to examine the impact of a clip’s performance. With Facebook previously touting that it is gearing up for a  video-ce

12 must-have iPhone apps

Image
Facebook The social network of record has come out with quite a few apps, but this one remains the most essential. According to PC Magazine, if you watch strangers using their iPhones, there is a good chance that Facebook is the app they are using. And there is a reason for that: No other communication app offers the richness of interaction possibilities. With the Facebook app, you can not only respond to friend’s posts, but also upload photos and even broadcast live video Flipboard Flipboard, an app initially designed for the iPad that curates content from your social networks and web partners (think periodicals, blogs, etc.) based on your interests and turns them into stunning magazine-like digital pages, is now available on the iPhone. Writing in PC Magazine, Muchmore and Duffy say the app is free to download and requires a free user account. Flipboard absolutely shines on the iPad, taking advantage of swiping gestures with both visual and interactive grace, and it is sti

There is no word on whether it will eventually find its way onto the Nintendo Switch, so maybe don’t hold your breath just yet.

Two battery defects caused Galaxy Note 7 explosions

Image
Samsung's full investigation into their issues with the Galaxy Note 7 has blamed two major battery defects  as the root cause of numerous device explosions that lead to a worldwide recall. After testing more than 200,000 defective devices with the help of 700 dedicated staff, Samsung identified specific issues with the design and manufacturing of these batteries, but claimed there were no issues with the rest of their smartphone's hardware or software. In the first set of batteries, manufactured by Samsung SDI, there was a flaw in the upper right corner of the battery that caused a deflection in the negative electrode. This deflection led to a short circuit, which caused fires and explosions in some cases. Samsung also identified a secondary issue where the negative electrode was incorrectly located in the curve of the battery. SOURCE

LG G6 Rumored To Come With Google Assistant Installed

Image
This is an interesting choice considering that LG has shadowed Samsung’s moves for its smartphones, and with Samsung rumored to launch its own voice assistant AI Bixby, we’re sure some would have thought LG would have followed suit. However we guess going with Google Assistant might not be such a bad idea, especially since it is probably better integrated into Android compared to other voice assistants. Of course this is just a rumor for now so take it with a grain of salt. So far what we know about the LG G6 includes its 5.7-inch QHD+ 18:9 display, and also how LG is killing off the modular features of the LG G5 and that for the LG G6, the handset will be a more “normal” looking device. LG has also recently confirmed their presence at MWC 2017 where they are expected to host a press conference on the 26th of February, 2017, so check back with us then for the details and to see if Google Assistant will indeed be a feature of the handset. Super Mario Run is coming to the Google Play Store in March

Image
It has been a few months since the release of Super Mario Run for iOS and while the game has been a success garnering 40 million downloads in its four days , we have yet to see it arrive on the Google Play Store for Android devices . A pre-registration option was unveiled in late December, but it now appears that Nintendo has unveiled an expected timeframe for when the app will become available for Android. For those that have been waiting patiently, Super Mario Run will now arrive in March. While a price has not been unveiled on the Google Play Store, you can probably expect it to be priced the same as its iOS counterpart at $9.99. If the release of a Mario title for mobile wasn't enough, Nintendo will also release its next console, the Switch in the same month. SOURCE

Varsity challenges youths on technology advancement

Image
As Nigeria hopes to revive the economy through the non-oil sector, especially through the Information and Communications Technology (ICT), students and youths have been challenged to take up skills in technology. Making this charge is the Vice Chancellor of The Paul University Awka, Venerable Prof  Uche Isiugo-Abanihe, when the school joined the world to mark her first ever Computer Science Education Week. Technological innovation is not just for computer science study, as there is hardly any sector in Nigeria that can flourish today without ICT, which is a potent tool to lift the nation out of recession if fully embraced by the youths, who make up the highest percentage of Nigeria’s population. He applauded the feats of the students of Paul University, who built mobile and web apps to meet the needs and solve societal problems. While applauding the Founder of Women in Technology of Nigeria (WITIN), Mrs. Martha Omoekpen Alade, for bringing the Young Coders Club to

Huawei P10 release date, specs and rumours

Image
Huawei has consistently impressed us with flagship smartphones, and so it’s no surprise that the tech world is excited to see what the Huawei P10 has to offer. The Chinese tech giant has already confirmed a press conference for the end of February where we’ll see a new “flagship device”, but the finer details remain a mystery. However,we don’t have a confirmed release date for the Huawei P10, but we have a very good idea of when we’ll be able to get our hands on it. First, here’s a brief rundown of release dates for previous flagship Huawei smartphones: Huawei P9 – April 29, 2016 Huawei P8 – April 15, 2015 Huawei P7 – June 7, 2014 Huawei P6 – June 18, 2013 The next big clue comes from Huawei itself: the company has invited journalists to a press conference at MWC 2017 , Barcelona’s annual technology tradeshow. It takes place on Sunday, February 26, 2017, and kicks off at 14:00 local time. What’s interesting is that Huawei says it will host the “global unveiling

Snapchat making updates on Ads

Image
Snapchat is indeed growing by the day and it is not surprising the company is moving towards Ad business. Snap is testing two major features and this video ads will be inserted between stories which will make advertisers to meet their target when it comes with sales. Indeed, with Snap Ads, advertisers can take snapchat users out of the app and direct them to other apps if the user has downloaded on their device. Although Snapchat already offers a similar experience through its Integration with Uber , but right now advertisers can now pay for access For example, a Telecommunication company could purchase a Snap Ad after users see 10 second video, they are directed to swipe up. Instead of showing the traditional web- view, users may be directed into another app. If they don't have the necessary app downloaded, they could be brought to a page where the app could be downloaded. Be that as it may, in as much we can commend the laudable strategy from Snapchat, on the other hand,

Game of Thrones' author finally addresses next book's date

Image
Getting George R.R. Martin to discuss his next book's publication date is as tough as convincing   Cersei Lannister   to join the PTA. That's why it was so surprising on Tuesday when the author actually answered a reader question about "Winds of Winter," the scheduled sixth book in the " Song of Ice and Fire " saga that inspired HBO's hit show " Game of Thrones ." The fan certainly knew how to wheedle an answer out of the author,   writing on Martin's blog : "I respect you immensely and do not want you to rush or release anything until you are completely satisfied with it. That being said, it has been a whole year since we have received an update. You have placated our hunger with   another superb sample   and for that, we are grateful. But unless you want to be bombarded with (messages) like this, I would suggest another update." And Martin actually responded! Not exactly in the way fans might hope, but it was still a respon

How the iPhone has transformed over 10 years

Image
It’s hard to believe that it’s a decade since the iPhone was first unveiled, such has been the impact of the first modern smartphone. On January 9 2007, when Steve Jobs took to the stage to show off this iPod / phone combo, the Motorola Razr V3 was the must-have handset, Nokia, BlackBerry and Sony Ericsson were all still a big deal, and the bulky, screen-sliding Telstra hiptop 2 was pegged as “the next big thing”. Flip phones were still popular, physical buttons obviously had to be there and a 3MP camera was considered to be extravagantly high-end. Now, however, almost all phones follow the foundations laid out by that original iPhone and we’ve had 14 new models of Apple’s handset since then. But exactly how much has the iPhone changed over the past ten years? Despite being described at the time by Jobs as a “magical device” that would “revolutionize the industry,” what was announced on stage was hardly the best technology around - and by modern standards, it’s

Nigerians spend 193 minutes on their smartphones daily

Image
Findings have showed that Nigerians spend 193 minutes on their smartphones daily, and businesses must understand this to stay atop. Experts have also said that leveraging the digital revolution by tapping into the power of ‘Big Data’ will help businesses stay close and understand their market better, especially in 2017. They have equally cautioned that due to the present economic recession, companies choosing cost-cutting measures may be negatively impacted with declining value proposition. The narratives have always been cost-cutting, but for businesses to be sustainable or defensible this year, you can’t continue to cut costs, because you are not going to be competitive in the market. This position comes on the heels of a report by Gemalto, which indicated that 2017 would see mobile advertising spending exceeds desktop ad spending for the first time. An earlier report released by Twinpine, a digital marketing firm, placed Nigeria ahead as the most mobile telecommunicatio

FACEBOOK NOW OFFERS AUTO-SUBTITLING FOR PAGE VIDEOS

Image
Facebook has quietly rolled out its auto-subtitling function for videos to Pages in the United States. The feature, which was released exclusively for video ads in February 2016, provides captions for English-language clips through an automated process. Facebook confirmed to  TechCrunch  that it began rolling out the function to Pages in October. Video captions on Facebook are powered by voice recognition, allowing Pages and marketers to manually edit the transcriptions in case of errors. Over time, as more people use the AI-assisted subtitling system, it could develop into a powerful tool — especially since the social network itself predicts that by 2021 video will generate 70 percent of its traffic. source
